  1. The Seven Simple Secrets was a good book, but not all the secrets are simple. Every teacher, whether they have taught one year or thirty, can use information from the book as a jump start or as a reminder. The last half of the book was more interesting to me, probably because I am already a person who establishes rules and procedures for my own sanity. It would be valuable for new teachers. For that reason I give this book an 8.

  2. I give the book a 6 or 7. I really liked the lay out. Some of the examples, however, were not a realistic picture of a true classroom. (example: Ms. Proactive, page 18-19) With that being said, secrets 4-7 are a good reminder of ideals we should all strive to obtain.

  3. I would give the book an 8. Even though I have taught for 20 years, it is good to be reminded of some of the things that we need to do in our classrooms. In our master's class this past summer, we read a book by Harry Wong that had a similar content. I enjoyed reading about the ideas from teachers in the Wong book. As an undergrad at KSU, I don't remember reading a book like this. Should be mandatory for student teachers.

  4. I enjoyed the book and would give it an 8. I felt the way it was set up, by the "secrets", it was quick to read and gave a lot of good ideas. I liked the stories, even if all of them weren't 100% realistic, it made me stop and think, "How could I handle a situation differently?" The secrets and ideas applied to real things that teachers face. It is good to take time and reflect on something so that you can learn from it. It was also a book that fit any teacher, whether they had been teaching 1 year or 20 years.

  5. I would give this book a 7. For myself, having taught over 20 years, the first 4 steps seemed more for new teachers. Some of the examples in the book made me wonder if the authors had ever been in a real classroom. There were parts of the book that made me reevaluate how I'm doing things in my classroom and possible ways that I could change or tweek what I am already doing.

  6. I would give this book an 8. The information was applicable to my classroom, and served as a reminder. I think the most beneficial message I recieved from reading this book is that we, the teachers, have the biggest influence on our classroom and students. I know I have heard some of these things before, but its important to have a refresher every now and then. I liked the blog format, reading each other's responses was interesting.

  7. I think a rating of 8 or 9 seems right. I really enjoy reading this type of content. It is important to review good teaching techniques. Most of what I valued in this book was the language we should use when working with young people. Respectful, honest, and positive.

  8. I believe I would give this book an 8. Some of the information was review but even review information is useful because it reminds of things that we should try to do to help our classrooms be a learning rich environment. It definitely made me reflect on how I run my classroom and what I need to do to make it a better place for my students to feel motivated and focused on learning.

  9. I would rate the book an 8 because it gave me some "food for thought". There are many things in the book that made me rethink the kind of teacher I have become. It helped me to feel good about many things that I have done that were just good old common sense and a result of life experience. But, there were also some things that I find myself doing and thinking that I really don't feel too good about. I will try to change these things.

I think this is a book that not only new teachers, but also veteran teachers, should read.

  10. I would rate the book an 7 1/2. It caused me to do a self-evaluation as I was reading. Some of the examples were a little unrealistic in the real classroom. I felt the second half of the book was better than the first half. The book does leave me with some areas that I should work on.

  11. I would give the book an 8. It didn't get a 10 because there really wasn't any suspense, action, or destruction in it. (I've gotten into the suspense-action-covert operations type of reading) Seriously, I think the book does a good job of giving tips we can all use in the classroom, and making suggestions to create better classroom teachers. It is something that would be a great project for new teachers (maybe to replace some of the new teacher academy activitiies???). The book is easily understood, and gives practical advice we can all use.
