Secret 5 Part 7

After reading Secret 5, Part 7, did you recognize any areas which we, as a CCCMS staff need to focus? Do you feel that we are as student-focused as we need to be? Explain.

  1. I feel we as a staff are very student-focused as we are continually working with the students to help them succeed. Each teacher knows what material is to be covered in their subject, but if there is an area that I need to focus on is to know more about my students and their interests. I know about certain students, but the quiet and uninvolved students can be overlooked.

  2. We are very student focused on those subjects that are state assessed, and I understand the emphasis. We also need to be aware of the other interests the students might have and find ways to help them explore options that would be realistic for high school and beyond. I challenged myself one semester to be sure to have some kind of conversation with each student every day. It was interesting how some kids are so good at demanding attention while others seem to require little attention.

  3. I feel we have always been student-focused, but that teaming has really helped us to do this. We have had the time to look at students individually and come up with strategies to help them. We would not be teachers if we didn't enjoy working with kids, and it is always good to stop and reflect on that. It can help remind us to not get too sidetracked by the paperwork, etc.

  4. This is the most student-centered building I have been in. We have many strategies and procedures in place to help students that struggle with assessments. However, I would love for us to find something in this building that each student can be successful at. Many times we pull students from something they are successful at (an elective or another class) to make them practice/work on something they are hate to do because they struggle.

  5. I believe we are a student-centered facility. We make our decisions based on what our students need to be successful not only on state assessments, but also to be successful at the next level, and in life. I'm sure we will continue to base our decisions, whether they be regarding budget cuts, programs, or assessment practices, based on what is best for our individual students. I think we need to continue to improve on our positive attitude towards our students and profession as a whole. We all have to deal with students/adults who grate on our nerves or assignment we're not fond of. If we can focus on the positives and not comment on the negatives, we will continue to improve the climate of our school.

  6. Yes, we are very student-focused. I remember hearing an adult visitor comment about how "student-centered" our school was on her way into the YOGOWYPI assembly this year. It was great to hear someone else recognize what the administration and staff strive to do, put our students first. This morning's club time and PEP assembly are just a few examples of keeping our student's interests in mind.

  7. Team time insures that we are student focused. If problems arise, we are able to deal with them in a timely manner. What is best for the student is always at the top of the agenda. We do many things in our building such as going that extra mile in having a PM Academy, being available after school so students can receive extra help, and having a special day set aside just so our 6th graders make the transition smoothly into middle school. We are also good in communicating problems directly with our parents.

  8. Yes, I believe we are very student focused especially since we have team time to discuss. Knowing that students we have in our classrooms are very unique, I feel we make every effort to help them become as successful as we can. We have several programs in place to help this happen. We communicate with the students as well as parents to keep them aware.

  9. Ditto Paige's comments!!!!!!! We have to give the kids a chance to be successful. Even though the electives are not assessed areas we are still considered a part of the core curriculum according to NCLB. Students need to learn how to express themselves in a constructive controlled way and that is where I feel electives play a hug role. Elective classes also teach skills that students can utilize as life long skills.

  10. I really love the student-centered focus of our school. Teaming helps us focus on individual student needs, becoming better teachers by learning new techniques, and being reminded of what's important as we do our daily jobs.

I believe that much of this is a credit to our leadership. Our administration and building leadership team help keep us focused on what's best for our students.

  11. I think CCCMS is a very student centered school. With the State Assessments we have to be intune with our students to know what they excel in and what they are needing help in as individuals. As not all students are "core curriculum centered", even though that is what is tested, I think we need to make sure we are offering many electives to the students to help them become productive citizens in every day living.

  12. Although this is the only building I have taught in other than my student teaching experiences. I feel that we are truly student centered and team time and the strategies that we all try to incorporate into our classroom, throughout the school, not only the core classes but the elective classes as well. We all work together to meet the common goal, which is success of our students.

  13. We do a great job of doing our job here at CCCMS. We focus on what is best for our students. We have many opportunities for student involvement such as: CIA, Friday clubs, positive addiction month, SWAT, etc. We do so much more then instruct the students in our subject areas.

  14. I, too, believe we are definitely student-focused in all that we do. Our teaming is constantly evaluating and refining our commitment to the students. Our in services and in school workshops (Reading) are geared to student improvement. Our assemblies are consistently recognizing and applauding student achievement.I do, however, miss the PAWS where we had more time to get to know and interact with the students. I realize that PAWS with an emphasis on MTSS is necessary, but I feel that we have "dehumanized" (Is there such a word?)the PAWS hour and have lost the original intent of the PAWS hour.
