Secret 6 Part 5

“How to Give Students What They Want and Need” What are thoughts on the List on page 104? Are there areas on that list which you feel need to be refined in your own professional practice?

  1. The list on page 104 are admirable traits that are important to students so teachers need to be aware of those qualities. While I try to be as fair and consistent as I can, I feel like I can always work on that. It isn't always easy when we have such an assortment of activities going on in the room.

  2. The list compromises all elements that a master teacher would portray. It is difficult to do all of those every day. I am still working on my patience. It is difficult for me to have patients with a student when I have demonstrated, explained, and provided examples for multiple times day after day. And then they come to me and say "Now, how do we do this?" I become frustrated with that. Like I said, I am still working on my patients.

  3. Wow- what a list. I wish that I could say I do all of those things all of the time, but I am human. It was a good list to read, and probably to reread down the road. We all make mistakes that later in the day we realize we wish we would have handled differently. But if we learn from those mistakes that helps us the next time we are in a situation that is similar. The ones that caught my attention that I could work on are patience and challenging students.

  4. I think we all try to adhere to that list, but we are human and do fall short. We just have to remind ourselves that each day is a new day and remember it is not about me, but them.

  5. I eluded to part of this question in my previous response. We may be the only positive force in some of our students' lives. It is easy to be nice when all is going well. We need to remember that students need to know we care about them. We need to help them out when they are struggling. They can trust us and we can believe in them. If we don't believe in them, who will? Never give up on a student. They will know and give up on themselves. We are teachers and we should care about each and every student.

  6. Every year that I teach, I feel like I grow as a teacher and do better with adhering to the list. It is hard in the short amount of time that we have each day. The best we can do is to recognize our shortcomings and find ways to improve the next time.

  7. While reading through this list, it seems easy to say these are all the things students need and want from teachers. We need to review this list often and remember what students really need the most, our support. We know we need to be patient, smile, understanding, and keep things interesting, but all to often we get too caught up in the moment and forget why we are really here.

  8. The list is a great reminder of why I became a teacher. We chose this profession to help students, but often get caught up in the frenzy. This list would be great to keep handy in order to help me remember the impact we have on each of our students.

  9. Okay, another list to tape to my podium! It's a great list. We can't do all these things everyday, but we can make sure we try to cover them as often as possible. I need to work on my patience with students and be sure that I discipline them effectively. This would involve keeping it private and making sure they are not embarrassed in front of their peers.

  10. This list is something that I need to think about... Everyday I think about what I need from my students. I go home at night and grade their papers and think about the content that I need to teach them for the State Assessment. I worry that I am not doing enough and if they fail, it will be a reflection of my teaching.

I feel that I am beginning to lose sight of why I became a teacher. I love kids! This list helps me to refocus on the students. I am going to post this list near my desk and read it every day to help me once again be the teacher I want to be...

  11. I can understand why students would want all of those qualities in the teacher, they want to feel safe and feel that we care about them as a person, not just a student. I agree that we are human and although we could strive to meet all of these expectations it we will not be all of these things on the same day. I feel I am always trying to improve in all areas of my teaching I know that my patience has definitely improved over the last five years. I believe the area that I need to work on the most is getting to know all of my students to have a connection with each one. I know that is a tall order since it is hard to make a connection with 85 students but I start with a few students and improve that number each year.

  12. The list made me stop and ponder how my students would grade me on each want. I hope my students would give me high scores. I know I always try to do the things on the list, but some challenging days may cause me to fall short.

  13. I think this is a great self-evaluation tool for classroom teachers. We may not be able to meet every single need every day of the year, but if we're conscious of those needs and wants, we will be more successful in dealing with our students. I'm sure there are several of these items I can improve on. I am much more empathetic as a teacher than I was 15 years ago. I feel I am more student focused and have a better understanding of the kids who come into my classroom every year.
